EPA’s indoor air quality guidance says people spend about 90% of their time indoors and that understanding and controlling common indoor pollutants can help reduce health risks. The agency emphasizes source control, ventilation and filtration as core strategies.

Indoor pollutants can come from many sources: tobacco smoke, cooking, gas appliances, fireplaces, cleaning products, building materials, mold, dust, radon, outdoor pollution that enters the home and poor ventilation. The health effects vary depending on the pollutant, concentration and duration of exposure.

For respiratory health, the concern is cumulative. A poorly ventilated home may trap particles, allergens, combustion byproducts or chemical irritants. People with asthma may notice more coughing, wheezing or chest tightness. Others may experience eye, nose or throat irritation, headaches or fatigue. Some risks, such as radon or long-term combustion exposure, are less obvious but still important.

EPA’s approach is organized around practical principles. First, reduce or remove the source when possible. Second, improve ventilation when outdoor air is safe. Third, use filtration to reduce particles in indoor air. The agency’s introduction to indoor air quality explains that source control is usually the most effective way to improve indoor air.

That hierarchy matters. An air purifier can help, but it cannot fully compensate for ongoing pollutant sources. A high-quality HVAC filter may reduce particles, but it will not fix a gas leak, mold problem or unsafe combustion appliance. Ventilation can dilute pollutants, but opening windows during wildfire smoke or high outdoor ozone may make air quality worse.

For households, the starting point is a practical audit: identify pollutant sources, check ventilation, use kitchen exhaust when cooking, control moisture, avoid indoor smoke and choose filtration suited to the space. Testing for radon may also be appropriate depending on geography and housing type.

Indoor air quality is not about making a home feel fresher. It is about making the air safer to breathe. As more people think about health at home, the next wellness upgrade may not be another device or supplement. It may be cleaner indoor air.
