Nasal breathing has become a popular performance claim among runners, trainers and wellness influencers. Research suggests it may change breathing patterns during exercise, but the evidence does not support a simple rule that nasal breathing is always better.
Studies comparing nasal and oral breathing during exercise show that nasal breathing may reduce breathing frequency and encourage more controlled ventilation at lower or moderate intensities. But as workload rises, oral or oronasal breathing may allow greater airflow and ventilation, which can matter during high-intensity efforts.
The nose is designed to filter, warm and humidify incoming air. It also adds resistance, which can slow breathing and encourage more deliberate respiratory patterns. For easy runs or aerobic base training, nasal breathing may act as a pacing tool by keeping exertion from drifting too high.
But exercise intensity changes the equation. When the body demands more oxygen and needs to remove more carbon dioxide, the mouth provides a larger pathway for airflow. That is why many athletes naturally shift to mouth breathing during sprints, intervals, hill climbs or race efforts.
A study on oral versus nasal breathing during anaerobic power output noted that as work rate and intensity increase, oral breathing seems better suited because it can deliver larger volumes of oxygen to the working body at a faster rate. A more recent study on breathing mode during acute exhaustive exercise explored whether nasal or oral breathing affects muscle performance during high-intensity work.
For recreational athletes, the most useful framing is not nasal versus mouth breathing. It is controlled versus uncontrolled breathing. Nasal breathing may help teach rhythm, reduce overbreathing and support calm effort. Mouth breathing may be necessary and appropriate when intensity rises.
The practical application is simple. Athletes can experiment with nasal breathing during warmups, cooldowns and easy aerobic sessions. If nasal breathing causes distress, dizziness or a major drop in performance, switching to mixed or mouth breathing is reasonable.
People with allergies, deviated septum, asthma, nasal obstruction or chronic sinus problems may need to adapt the approach. For them, breathing strategy should be individualized and not treated as a test of discipline.
The performance world often turns breathing into a binary debate. The science points to something more useful: breathing mode is a tool, and the right tool depends on intensity, training goal and the individual athlete.
